Data Volume Estimates

Huffman Compression

During commissioning, we ran with an ASIC gain of 14 mV/fC and an ASIC shaping time of 2 us, which results in a compression factor of ~5. If the shaping time were reduced to 1 us, then the compression factor would be reduced to a factor of ~3. The measured Huffman compression factors are given below.

Event Sizes

Huffman compressed data taken with an ASIC gain setting of 14 mV/fC and an ASIC shaping time of 2 us has a raw binary data size of 34 MB/event. When this data is reformatted into an art ROOT file ("swizzled") for our LArSoft event processing framework, it becomes 57 MB/event. If our reconstruction chain is optimized, we estimate that the final reconstructed data product will be 158 MB/event.

Online Data Processing Rates

Our online file servers, "evb" and "near1", can sustain simultaneous read/write speeds of 500 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively. The process that swizzles raw binary data into art ROOT files takes 10 sec/event. Therefore, we can only sustain an online swizzling event rate of ~1 Hz, given the number of cores available on near1.

Our sustained network bandwidth for transferring data from evb out of LArTF (through near1) while the DAQ is running (but with the swizzler turned off) is 2 - 3.5 Gbit/s. The transfer to tape storage (ENSTORE) can then sustain a rate of 1 TB/hr.

At a trigger rate of 5 Hz, we will be saturating ~70% of our LArTF network bandwidth and ~60% of FNAL's tape storage bandwidth just storing the raw binary data alone (no swizzling).
