Beam - Guide

The Beam - Overview page lists the typical checks necessary for beam monitoring. Here you can find more details about what is being monitored.

The Accelerator Complex Current Beam Conditions page gives an overview of the accelerator complex. You can find out here if there is any major reason for downtime by checking the comments at the bottom of the page or if accelerator is running. However, this will not necessarily update promptly if there are minor downtimes. This page also gives you the current beam intensity delivered to various machines.

The BNB status page shows the beamline instrumentation summary. A lot of instrumentation is used to monitor the primary proton beamline. Among this instrumentation are Beam Position Monitors arranged along the beamline and used to measure the proton beam postion. Two beam profile monitors (Multiwires) just upstream of target measure both position and the beam profile. Two toroids measure the intensity of the beam.
The status page shows any active alarms, beam rate and intensity, beam position along the BNB beamline, as well as beam position and width upstream of the target. Autotune is used to steer the beam through nominal positions along the beamline (Location 860 up to TGT). If beam veers of, auto tune corrects it and steers it back to the nominal position. During normal running the BPMs along the beamline should mostly be within nominal. The beam position and profile at the target (as determined by last two BPMs and Multiwires) should be stable. Change in position or width might result in protons missing the target. Most of the boxes are clickable links and more information can be found by clicking on them.

The status page shows the present reading of beamline instrumentation. All of this data is being stored to IF beam Database. The IF Beam DB dashboard provides another view of beam data. Some of it is redundant to the status page, but it verifies that the data is being stored in the database. At present the page shows following devices:
  • TOR860, TOR875 - two toroids in BNB measuring beam intensity. TOR860 is at the beginning of the beamline, and TOR875 is at the end.
  • THCURR - horn current
  • HWTOUT - horn water temperature coming out of the horn.
  • BTJT2 - target temperature
  • HP875, VP875 - beam horizontal and vertical positions at the 875 location, about 4.5 m upstream of the targetcener.
  • HPTG1, VPTG1 - beam horizontal and vertical positions immediately ( about 2.5m ) upstream of the target center.
  • HPTG2, VPTG2 - beam horizontal and vertical positions more immediately ( about 1.5m ) upstream of the target center.
  • Because there are no optics between H/VP875 and H/VPTG2, the movements on these monitors should scale with the difference in distances.
  • BTJT2 - target air cooling temperature. Four RTD measure the return temperature of the cooling air. This is the one closest to the target.
  • BTH2T2 - target air cooling temperature. This is the temperature of the air going into the horn.
