MiniSurvey

According to the SV observation plan (docdb-6630), there are 350 exposures (per grizY filter) allocated for the programs MiniSurvey1 (200 exposures) and MiniSurvey2 (150 exposures). The field coverage is based on the requested areas for the SV goals listed in RegularObservations:
  • VVDS-2hr field (only a single DES pointing)
  • CFTHLS W1 (35 sq. deg.)
  • Stripe 82 (20 sq. deg.)

I've designed the actual pointings considering the main survey hex and tiling configuration (see below) such that the data counts for the main survey if it has sufficient quality (to be determined by the SV team). Therefore the pointing list is simply a list of hexes and the offset number from 0 to 9 and is expected to be executed by ObsTac. In the event that ObsTac cannot handle the observing plan (or ew decide that it should not handle it), the RA/Dec for each of the pointings is also listed.

We will use obstac for the mini survey. The coordinates of the mini survey observations have been loaded into the obstac database and obstac has been configured with a tactician, the piece of code that selects the next exposures, that gives highest priority to mini survey 1a. If no hex of 1a is observable (for example because the airmass would be too high) it switches to 1b and then to 2. The observer can monitor what obstac is doing by watching the exposure queue. The object keywords reflects which part of the mini survey is being observed.

MiniSurvey1a essentially gives us a complete coverage of the VVDS-2hr field plus about 20 sq. deg of CFHTLS W1, with small edges losses.

MiniSurvey1b should extend the area to the North to cover a decent chunk of Stripe82. However, due to subpar image quality so far in the North, we decided to cut the program roughly in half, forming the new MiniSurvey1' with 130 exposures in total.

Combined MiniSurvey 1 and 2 coverage

The original SV plan aimed for an even larger MiniSurvey 1+2, but that seems to be out of questions at this point.

DES offset patterns

This is the offset pattern for each tiling of the DES main survey (as per Jim Annis, September 14). In order to be (re-) useable for the main survey, SV regular observations should comply with the hex/tiling plan of the main survey

During the October 1 telecon, Jim mentioned that these offsets might change, which does not pose a big problem for MiniSurvey1/2 as long as they are still centered on the reference offset 0, since details of the offset pattern only matter at the field boundaries.
